Replace it when callers sound faint, crackly or silent unless speakerphone is on. Clean the earpiece grille first; a blocked mesh can make a working earpiece sound faint. Fitting is a job for a trained technician: test the part before it's fixed in place, and leave any stickers and film on until then, because a fitted or altered part can't be returned.
