How to Reset Sony WF Earbuds: Reset and Initialize Are Not the Same

1. 1Sony has two different operations, and only one of them helps

   This is where almost everyone goes wrong with Sony. RESETTING restarts a bud that has stopped responding — it keeps your pairing information. INITIALIZING restores factory settings and DELETES all pairing information. If you are fitting a replacement bud, or a replacement charging case, initializing is the one you need. Following a "reset" guide will leave the old pairing in place and the new bud will never sync.

2. 2Find your exact model number first

   It is printed on the bud stem or inside the charging case lid, and it matters more with Sony than with most brands — the WF-C500 and the WF-C510 are one digit apart and initialize in completely different ways. Check before you start rather than halfway through.

3. 3Charge the case and both buds before you begin

   Sony state outright that a charging case without enough battery will simply not start the procedure — nothing happens and it looks like a failed attempt. Charge for at least thirty minutes first.

4. 4Initialize — WF-1000XM4 (touch sensors, in the case)

   Put both buds in the charging case and leave the lid OPEN. Hold your fingers on the touch sensors of both the left and right units for about 10 seconds, until the case indicator flashes RED. Release within 5 seconds of it starting to flash. When the case indicator flashes GREEN four times, the headset is initialized.

5. 5Initialize — WF-C510, WF-C700N and LinkBuds S (button on the case)

   These use a dedicated initialize button on the charging case, not the buds. Put both buds in the case and leave the lid OPEN, then press and hold the initialize button on the back of the case for 15 seconds or more. The case indicator flashes blue twice in a row, then starts flashing orange — release within 5 seconds of the orange starting. Green flashing four times means it is done.

6. 6Initialize — WF-C500 (both buds, out of the case, and it is a two-part hold)

   The odd one out, and worth reading twice. Press and hold the buttons on BOTH the left and right units for about 15 seconds. The blue indicators flash twice in a row and then the orange indicators start flashing — release within 5 seconds of that, and the orange indicators light up steadily. Now, within 10 seconds, press and hold both buttons AGAIN. After a few seconds the blue indicators flash four times and the headset is initialized. It then turns itself off, which is normal.

7. 7Other Sony models: check the help guide for yours

   Sony publishes a Help Guide page per model, and we do not publish a hold time for a model unless Sony states one for that model specifically. If yours is not listed above — WF-C710N, WF-1000XM5, WF-XB700 and others — search the Sony Help Guide for your model number plus "initializing" rather than assuming it matches a sibling. As the C500 and C510 show, siblings differ.

8. 8Delete the old pairing, then pair again

   Sony are explicit about this: after initializing, delete the pairing information for the headset from the connected device and then pair them again. Do it on every device that has ever connected to these buds — a laptop or second phone still holding the pairing will grab one bud the moment it powers on, which looks exactly like a failed initialize. Then play music in BOTH ears and make a test call, since the microphone often lives in one specific bud.
