Low volume on one side is usually a blocked mesh or a nudged audio-balance slider, not a dead earbud. Both fixes are free. Try them before buying anything.
Before you start
1Check the audio balance slider — 30 seconds, and it is free
On Android: Settings, Accessibility, then Audio or Hearing, and find the left/right balance slider. On iPhone: Settings, Accessibility, Audio and Visual. If it has drifted off centre, one side really is quieter and no part will fix it. This is embarrassingly common and takes half a minute to rule out.
2Look at the speaker mesh under a torch
Hold the quiet bud so light rakes across the mesh. Compare it against the loud one. Earwax and dust pack into that mesh over months and it is the single most common cause of one side sounding muffled or thin.
3Brush the mesh dry, facing downwards
Bud held mesh-down. Work a soft dry toothbrush across the mesh so debris falls away from the driver. Do this for a good minute. Sticky putty pressed lightly onto the mesh and peeled off lifts more out without pushing anything in.
4Only then use a barely-damp swab
If the mesh still looks occluded, touch a cotton swab to isopropyl alcohol, squeeze most of it out, and wipe the mesh surface once. Still mesh-down. Let it dry for ten minutes before use.
5Re-test properly
Play the same track through both buds at the same volume, then swap which ear each bud sits in. If the quiet side follows the bud, it is the bud. If it stays in the same ear, it is your ear or the balance setting, not the hardware.

If the quiet side follows the earbud when you swap ears, and the balance slider is centred, the driver in that bud is likely failing. That is the point at which a single replacement bud is the right purchase — but not before, because a bud bought over a nudged slider comes straight back.
Can I fix a blown driver?
No. The driver is bonded inside the bud housing and is not sold or serviced separately. Replacing the affected bud is the only repair.
Why does wax build up on only one side?
Most people produce more in one ear than the other, and the bud that sits deeper collects more. It is normal, and it is why cleaning both buds every few weeks prevents this whole problem.
Does noise cancellation still work if one bud is replaced?
Yes, ANC works across the pair once both buds are reset and synced, provided the replacement is the same model and generation.
