A vertical green line means the display panel has failed. Check whether your brand replaces it free first β several do, even outside warranty.
Before you start
1First: check whether your brand replaces it free
OnePlus has run a free lifetime display replacement programme for green-line issues in India, covering devices regardless of warranty status. Samsung India has run free replacement programmes for green-line faults on several Galaxy S-series models, typically once per device and within an age limit. Policies change, so call the brand or visit an authorised service centre and ask specifically about the green-line policy for your model before you pay anyone, including us.
2Confirm it really is the panel
Restart the phone, then boot into safe mode. If the line survives both, and it is present on the boot logo before Android loads, the panel is at fault rather than an app. A line that appeared after a drop or after the phone got wet is mechanical and will not be covered by a goodwill programme.
3Decide: repair, live with it, or replace the phone
A green line does not spread on every device, but it commonly widens over weeks to months. Weigh the display cost against the phone value. On a three-year-old budget phone the display can be a large fraction of what the handset is worth, and that is a legitimate reason to leave it.
4Order the right display for your exact model
Displays are model-specific and often variant-specific. Match the full model number, not the marketing name, and check whether your phone needs a display with the frame attached. Fitting a bare panel where a folder was expected is the most common ordering mistake.
5Fit it, or have it fitted
Our display replacement guide covers the full procedure β softening the adhesive, disconnecting the battery first, transferring the earpiece mesh and brackets, and dry-testing before you seal anything. Read it end to end before you start.

Will a software update or factory reset remove the green line?
No. A green or pink vertical line is a failure in the display panel driver or its connection. Software cannot repair hardware, and a factory reset only costs you your data.
Why do green lines appear on AMOLED screens specifically?
The line usually traces to a failed row or column driver in the panel, or a weakening connection at the panel edge. Ageing, heat and flex stress all contribute, which is why it often appears with no drop involved.
It appeared after I dropped the phone. Does the free programme still apply?
Usually not. Goodwill programmes typically cover spontaneous failures, not physical or liquid damage. Ask anyway, but plan on paying if there is visible damage.
Does replacing the display affect my fingerprint sensor?
On phones with an in-display fingerprint sensor, yes, it can. The sensor is calibrated to the original panel, and after a swap it may need re-enrolment or may not work with a non-original display. Our fingerprint flex guide covers what to check.
